VVV-Venlo - Sparta

Sunday saw the second win of the season with a convincing victory over Sparta Rotterdam in Seacon Stadion – De Koel. An inspired VVV-Venlo wiped the floor with the team from Rotterdam and treated their fans to no less than 5 goals.

Kevin Begois, still suffering from his calf injury, was replaced in goal for the second time this season by Robert Böhm. Right from the whistle VVV-Venlo put the pressure on the Sparta’s defence forcing goalie Aleksander Seliga to act almost in the first minute to stop Ferry de Regt’s ball.

Adil Auassar scored the opening goal for VVV-Venlo. His header from a free kick by Achmed Ahahaoui defeated Seliga: 1-0. The only real chance for Sparta in the first half was from Kevin Strootman, but a fantastic reflex by keeper Böhm kept VVV-Venlo ahead. After this attempt, all the play was for VVV-Venlo who dominated on the opposing half.

Halfway through the first half victory was already sealed for VVV-Venlo. In the space of just three minutes the home team scored twice thanks to Achmed Ahahaoui and Sandro Calabro. Ahahaoui’s goal was a stunning example of timing and control: 2-0. This was followed by a typical Calabro goal. Keisuke Honda shot at Seliga and Calabro was in the right place to power in the ball on the rebound: 3-0. Having a new haircut hasn’t affected Calabro’s magic touch! The VVV-Venlo defence stayed concentrated and foiled any attempt by Sparta to score. Just before halftime the score board read 4-0 after an almost exact copy of the third goal. Once again the combined efforts of Honda and Calabro resulted in more joy for the home crowd.

With this score it was easy for Torres Blues to get the crowd on their feet and singing with a rendition of the song he wrote specially for VVV-Venlo ‘Juichen in De Koel’. Shortly after play resumed the fifth goal was close. Keisuke Honda opened the way for Ruben Schaken, but the right winger was too egoistic and eager to score himself and refused to play the ball back to Honda or Calabro. He was rewarded by a ball in the side net and a severe reprimand from Honda. In the second half the home team lacked the sparkle shown earlier, but with this convincing lead no one really minded.

Twenty minutes before full time the crowd was treated to another goal. Substitute Diogo Viana kept his cool and passed to Kevin van Dessel, who brought the score to: 5-0. This second win of the season was just what VVV-Venlo needed, bringing them to a safer tenth position in the table with 14 points. A real boost of courage for next week’s fixture against reigning national champions AZ.
