VVV-Venlo - FC Groningen 2-0
VVV-Venlo once again consigned Excelsior to last place in the Eredivisie. In the Seacon Stadion (De Koel), trainer Ton Lokhoff’s team defeated a disappointing FC Groningen with a score of 2-0, achieving VVV’s third successive home win.
VVV-Venlo took to their home field against Groningen without the suspended Bryan Linssen, who was replaced by Quin Kruijsen. The home team took the lead after 15 minutes. Yanic Wildschut picked up a rebound at the edge of the penalty area and smashed the ball past Groningen keeper Luciano da Silva: 1-0.
Six minutes later the visitors created the first real danger. From the right hand side, right back Johan Kappelhof delivered the ball into the penalty area. David Texeira rose highest and headed the ball towards the Venlo goal. The fingertips of keeper Dennis Gentenaar and the bar ensured the ball was diverted to safety. Texeira was looking dangerous again a few seconds later, but to did not create a chance of note.
Quin Kruijsen posed considerable threat half-way through the first half but his shot was saved by the Groningen keeper. VVV-Venlo made it 2-0 after exactly half an hour of play. Once again, Wildschut collected the ball. This time it was on the half-way line and the striker had a clear run at goal. At the right moment he brought Uche Nwofor into play with a clever shot that made it 2-0 to the team from Venlo. FC Groningen had one more moment of danger before half-time when Tim Sparv saw a long-range shot deflected by Dennis Gentenaar.
The first chance in the second half fell to FC Groningen, Maikel Kieftenbeld hitting the post. For the rest of the game, VVV-Venlo remained untroubled, and were allowed plenty of space by FC Groningen to allow Wildschut to have the chance to make it 3-0. It took until the dying minutes for VVV keeper Gentenaar to push away a drive from FC Groningen substitute Matias Jones for a corner. The 2-0 score turned out to be the final result in Venlo. This victory means that VVV-Venlo leapfrog Excelsior, consigning Excelsior back to the bottom of the league table. VVV-Venlo will face De Graafschap in Doetinchem next week Saturday during Carnival.
