VVV-Venlo - Roda JC 2-0

After a turbulent week, VVV-Venlo have done themselves a very good turn with a 2-0 victory in the Limburg derby against Roda JC Kerkrade. Barry Maguire and Bryan Linssen were the goal-scorers. VVV-Venlo also had to thank goalkeeper Wilko De Vogt as he saved a Mads Junker penalty when it was 1-0.

After two minutes already, the visitors were given the opportunity to open the score. A deep pass from Ruud Vormer created some panic in the VVV-Venlo defence. Maya Yoshida and goalkeeper Wilko De Vogt were looking at each other, presenting Mitchell Donald with a chance. All of a sudden, the midfielder found himself alone in front of De Vogt, but was denied by the keeper.

After that, the home side came into the game better. Halfway through the first half, Robert Cullen had two scoring opportunities. First, he totally missed a ball after Yanic Wildschut set him up and in the rebound he hit goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek.

More chances presented themselves after 30 minutes. A powerful shot from Wildschut was saved by Kieszek for a corner, which, in turn, was almost converted by Rogier Molhoek with a close range overhead. Just before the break, however, the 1-0 did come about. Linssen sent Musa away to appear alone in front of Kieszek, who brought him down, leaving referee Kuipers no other option than to red card the Pole and award a penalty. After some delay, Maguire beautifully slotted home from the spot: 1-0.

With Roda JC being down to ten men, the hosts had some more space but didn’t really utilise it well. At the other end, Davy De Beule got a chance to equalise, but was denied by De Vogt. The game began to be more open and Musa could have decided it. He dribbled past sub keeper Mateusz Prus, but failed to get the ball into the enemy goal.

De Vogt then emerged as the hero for the home team. A Niels Fleuren foul on De Beule was rightly punished with a penalty. Captain Mads Junker positioned himself behind the ball but his shot was skilfully saved by De Vogt. Moments later, the seasoned player had to come into action again.

During the last quarter of the game, VVV-Venlo’s victory was not really threatened, certainly not so when, seven minutes from the end, Bryan Linssen in a controlled way converted an Ahmed Musa pass from the edge of the area: 2-0. For the Venlo club, this victory concludes a turbulent week in an appropriate way. The second win of the season means that VVV-Venlo hand over the bottom last position to Excelsior. They are two points ahead of the Rotterdam side. A great boost for the “Koel club”.

Next week’s fixture is the last game of 2011: it is away against NEC Nijmegen.
