Heracles - VVV-Venlo

VVV-Venlo closed 2009 with a defeat. On a challenging astro-turf surface in Almelo the visitors lost by a narrow margin against Heracles Almelo: 1-0.

The home side launched the attack spearheaded by Bas Dost  – with eight goals to his name this season – immediately after the kick off, but Kevin Begois managed to keep his goal clean, despite the salvo of shots fired at him from a distance. The extremely slippery surface of the pitch made decent play virtually impossible. In the first half VVV-Venlo came nowhere near the Heracles Almelo goal at all. Clever footwork from Dost resulted in a goal, but from an offside position.  For Ken Leemans the winter break will last a bit longer than his team-mates – the midfielder was shown a yellow card and will be excluded from playing in the home fixture against Feyenoord on 24 January 2010.

In the second half Everton put the home team in the lead. He converted a free kick from 30 metres into a goal: 1-0. This was just about the only action for the rest of the game: the second half was characterised by mediocre football. Trainer Jan van Dijk brought on Ruud Boymans and Soufiane Dadda to try and chase the equaliser. Boymanns missed a good opening to score, plus the visitors were unlucky that the referred overlooked a tackle on Keisuke Honda in the penalty area. In the last ten minutes the game seem to revive slightly in favour of the home side with Willie Overtoom’s shot being saved by Begois and in the last minute Everton’s attempt hitting the post. VVV-Venlo’s mission to return home with a point failed.
