It took FC Twente three attempts to equalise. Blaise N’Kufo and Kenneth Perez failed to make any impression on Kevin Begois, so it was left to Bryan Ruiz to beat the VVV-Venlo keeper. FC Twente’s most expensive player anticipated well and scored the equaliser in style 1-1.

In the second half VVV-Venlo created some openings but FC Twente stood their ground. Ruben Schaken had a fantastic opportunity to score. The striker ran forward after a header from Sandro Calabro, but hesitated a fraction too long in front of Boschker, who reacted instinctively and diffused the danger. A minute later Honda tried again to assist Calabro, but luck had run out for the visitors.
VVV-Venlo footballed well and kept up the offensive. The hoped for penalty after a hands by
Jan van Dijk substituted central defender Frank van Kouwen for Kevin van Dessel and sent Ken Leemans forward to try and force the equaliser. Ken Leemans had one fine chance but the ball ended up in the wrong side of the net. The final score was 2-1 for FC Twente, but VVV-Venlo left the pitch at the Grolsch Veste with heads held high. Next week is another away game for VVV-Venlo with a long journey taking them to the Abe Lenstra Station to play SC Heerenveen.
