VVV-Venlo -ADO Den Haag (cup)

VVV-Venlo has reached the third round of the national cup competition. At home in Seacon Stadion – De Koel – the Venlo squad had no difficulty whatsoever in beating an uninspired ADO Den Haag. Whereas they only just managed a draw against the same side in their league match a few weeks ago, the visitors now had no chance at all: 3-0.

Compared to the line up defeated by Ajax, coach Jan Van Dijk had to make one change. Injured keeper Dennis Gentenaar was replaced by Kevin Begois. There were no further changes to the team and, therefore, no respite for the players who had already played a number of league games recently.

The first opportunity presented itself to the visiting team: Karim Soltani evaded the offside trap and, reading the game well, passed to Kai van Hese, who was rushing forward. The defender saw his pelting shot nicely stopped by Begois and the rebound was shot way over by Ricky van den Bergh.

Halfway through the first half, VVV-Venlo took over the initiative. Goalie Ditewig had a lucky escape when he saw a Sandro Calabro backward header just narrowly miss its target. A minute later, however, the keeper had to admit defeat. It looked as if Achmed Ahahaoui was playing the ball too far ahead of him, but with great strength of will managed to get the ball past Lorenzo Piqué and return it to Honda who simply scored the opening goal: 1-0. ADO Den Haag were unable to display any quality football and had all the luck in the world when, just before half-time,  Honda and Calabro got into each other’s way when Ruben Schaken fed the ball. A little more communication and the visitors would have been down by 2-0.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Van Dijk granted one of his substitutes his debut. Jasar Takak was told to warm up along the line to play his first minutes for VVV-Venlo. Much of the second half was less exciting than the first 45 minutes. There were no shots at goal and at no time did a lacklustre ADO Den Haag give the impression they had the energy to try and score. It was not until 18 minutes before the final whistle that some excitement returned to the Venlo stadium when Calabro passed the ball to Honda, who then shot wide of the goal.

Three minutes later, however, VVV-Venlo hit the mark, thanks to the Japanese international. The midfielder made optimal use of Ricky van den Bergh losing his footing and raced across the pitch. Honda kept his cool and pounded the ball into the far corner beyond Ditewig’s reach: 2-0. This definitely sealed the match. During the last 15 minutes VVV-Venlo were able to calmly finish the game and save their strength for the away game against FC Twente on Saturday.  In the closing stages of the game, Takak twice failed to add lustre to his debut with a goal. The icing ion the cake came from Sandro Calabro. Substitute Diogo Viana concluded a brilliant move by serving Sandro Calabro the ball on a plate. All the striker had to do was head the ball in : 3-0.
