VVV-Venlo - NAC
In Seacon Stadion – De Koel – the match ended for the eighth time in a draw for VVV-Venlo, with both teams only managing to score once. VVV-Venlo missed a good prospect of winning as the guests ended the game with just nine players.
VVV-Venlo started the game nervously, which was not surprising considering the number of changes made to the line up. Robert Böhm made his debut in goal. As if the injury problems weren’t enough, Adil Auassar had to call off on the day of the match, so Niels Fleuren resumed his usual place as the left back. After five minutes Matthew Amoah evaded the watchful eye of Patrick Paauwe and attacked the goal. Böhm reacted well and deflected the shot.
VVV-Venlo seized the initiative and opened up two chances. The first was for Frank van Kouwen who challenged Jelle ten Rouwelaar from a distance. The goalie had difficulty with the ball and gave away a corner. The keeper came out badly, but Ruben Schaken’s lob missed the goal. After seventeen minutes Robbert Schilder – with a yellow card already to his name– brought down Schaken after a fantastic pass from Van Kouwen. Referee Nijhuis showed him a red card immediately, so NAC continued with ten players.
VVV-Venlo used the space this created well – despite compact play by NAC Breda – and kept calm, with Ferry de Regt and Frank van Kouwen taking particular advantage of the situation. Patrick Paauwe saw the first chance by setting up a one-two with Schaken. He received the ball back and fired a left footed shot which was saved by Ten Rouwelaar. Just before half time the more than deserved opening goal fell for VVV-Venlo. Van Kouwen powered the ball into the back of the net from
In the second half NAC came back fighting. VVV-Venlo appeared to weaken and Kees Kwakman had two chances to score the equaliser. The home team had less ball possession and it seemed to be just a matter of time before the opponents would score, which they did twenty minutes before time. Leonardo’s quick reaction in the penalty area resulted in him passing Böhm: 1-1.
Wil Boessen tried to create more pressure by bringing on Diogo Viana to replace Kevin van Dessel and also gave Ruud Boymans his first appearance for VVV-Venlo. In the last five minutes VVV-Venlo were facing nine men. Tim Gilissen gave a harassed impression and tackled far too late, ending up connecting with Adil Auassar’s body instead of the ball. The home crowd tried to cheer their team to victory, but despite a number of chances there was no second goal for VVV. The match ended disappointedly for VVV-Venlo in their eighth draw this season. Next week is an away fixture against Vitesse.
