VVV-Venlo - Roda JC

The first Limburg derby produced no winner. At the Seacon Stadium – De Koel – both VVV-Venlo and Roda JC each scored once: 1-1. Thanks to the better goal difference, the home side keep ahead of the South Limburg side in the table.

 

From the very beginning of the Venlo game, no punches were pulled. During the first three minutes, both teams were yellow carded once already. For VVV-Venlo it was Ken Leemans who had the dubious honour to be booked, while Anouar Hadouir was the first of the visitors to receive a yellow card. In the opening stages of the game, VVV-Venlo were in possession most of the time and also more dangerous. Ruben Schaken, in particular, played very well during the first minutes. The first chance offered itself to Keisuke Honda, but his shot, however, was just wide. Achmed Ahahaoui had the best opportunity. Ruben Schaken passed the ball perfectly for the striker to head into the net. However, the header was not powerful enough to scare goalkeeper Bram Castro.

 

The Venlo waves of attack then gradually died down. Roda JC were unable to create anything either, but did take the lead. Ahahaoui tried to lay the ball back to the defence but the ball was too short and Morten Skoubo could intercept it. Reading the game well, the Dane finished the job beautifully with a clever lob: 0-1. Just before half-time, Kevin Begois saved his side. By coming out of the goal courageously, he prevented a Hadouir goal.

 

After the break, VVV-Venlo again had a dynamic start. Kevin Begois had to take action when Boldiszar Bodor fired a shot at goal but after that it was the home side that dominated the game. A corner produced the fully deserved equaliser. Ken Leemans was given all the freedom in the world by Eric Addo and struck a powerful header past the Roda JC keeper: 1- 1. A few minutes later, it was Marcel de Jong who saved his side. With a header he made a save on the goal line. Then, it was Ruben Schaken, Keisuke Honda, Sandro Calabro and Frank van Kouwen successively who were very close to a North Limburg lead. Then the Venlo storm abated allowing Roda JC to keep their footing effortlessly. However, in the very last minute, the visitors had a very lucky escape when Calabro shot a great chance over the enemy crossbar. As no goals were scored at the other end either, the 1-1 draw finally remained on the scoreboard. Next week, VVV-Venlo are away against Feyenoord.
