VVV-Venlo - Vitesse

VVV-Venlo finished the week in stunning style in their own Seacon Stadion – De Koel by beating Vitesse. An own goal by Vitesse defender Civard Sprockel and a perfectly taken free kick from Patrick Paauwe sealed the 2-0 victory for the home side.

Just like at last Tuesday’s game,VVV-Venlo started strongly and were in the lead after just nine minutes.  Adil Auassar went in deep on the left and played the ball back. Vitesse defender Civard Sprockel just beat Sandro Calabro to the ball, but to his surprise his touch sent the ball into his own goal: 1-0. Two minutes later the equaliser seemed close. Santi Kolk had all the space he needed but his shot was easily stopped by Kevin Begois. Vitesse had one other chance at scoring before halftime. Nicky Hofs collected a cross ball from Dalibor Stevanovic but once again his shot couldn’t pass Begois.

In the early minutes of the second half the home side had two good opportunities to consolidate the lead. Gonzalo García got away on the right flank and passed to Calabro. Velthuizen just about managed to deflect his shot, but sent the ball to land at Ruben Schaken’s feet. The attacker seemed sure to score, but narrowly missed the goal. Shortly afterwards more excellent play from Adil Auassar created a chance for Calabro to score, but his header was knocked over the post by the quick reaction of the Vitesse keeper.

Vitesse trainer Theo Bos tried to get more dominance over VVV-Venlo by bringing Alexander Büttner on to replace the weakly defending Kevin van Diermen. His substitution shifted Serginho Greene from a mid-field position to defence. Büttner made his mark on the game by coming close to 1-1. After a well executed attack he was the last man, however his shot lacked the power to surprise Begois. VVV-Venlo then played out the match without any real danger. Two minutes before the final whistle, Patrick Paauwe sealed the victory. His superb free kick mislead Piet Velthuizen and saw him score his first goal for VVV-Venlo: 2-0. This win puts VVV-Venlo in a comfortable ninth place in the table. Next week’s fixture is an away game against Sparta Rotterdam.
