VVV-Venlo - ADO Den Haag
Just like at last week’s duel against PSV, VVV-Venlo picked up a point in their second fixture of the season. Once again VVV-Venlo had to struggle from 0-2 to equalise leaving the final score at: 2-2.
Michael Timisela and Ruben Schaken were not part of the selection in Seacon Stadion – De Koel – leaving the way free for Henrico Drost and Diogo Viana to make their first appearance. In the early stages of the game VVV-Venlo was sloppy, and after just eight minutes saw ADO Den Haag take the lead thanks to Wesley Verhoek. Patrick Paauwe tried to deflect the ball but failed: 0-1.
VVV-Venlo wasn’t intimidated and tried to equalise. Five minutes later there was a good chance of making it 1-1 . Diogo Viana passed Kai van Hese on the right and launched the ball in the penalty area. Sandro Calabro sent the ball to the near post giving Achmed Ahahaoui a great chance to score, but the attacker’s attempt sailed over the post.
This was the only good piece of action from VVV-Venlo in the first half. Assisted by VVV-Venlo player Sandro Calabro, ADO Den Haag consolidated their lead. A clumsy hand ball by Calabro left referee Liesveld with no other option than to award a penalty. Ricky van den Bergh converted this unexpected bonus and drove the home crowd wild: 0-2. The score now matched last week’s score against PSV.
Before half time VVV-Venlo managed to even things up a little to 1-2. Keisuke Honda evaded Kai van Hese and Danny Buijs, giving Viana a chance to show his dribbling skill. About
VVV-Venlo started the second half better. First, van den Bergh’s free kick hit the bar and his later header went over the net. After an hour, former VVV-Venlo player Karim Soltani committed a stupid offence and was given his second yellow card of the afternoon. With one man up VVV-Venlo failed to create any chances in the first ten minutes. Jan van Dijk substituted Ruben Schaken for defender Henrico Drost with effect. Just a few minutes after coming on to the pitch he sent a ball flying from the right into the penalty box where Honda was waiting at the far post. His header brought the score to: 2-2.
Five minutes before full time ADO Den Haag were down to nine men. Midfielder Ricky van den Bergh took out his frustration on Patrick Paauwe and was penalised with his second yellow card and sent off. His leisurely stroll over the pitch caused a ruckus which ended up with both Keisuke Honda and Timothy Derijck being shown yellow. Referee Liesveld added seven minutes extra time to compensate for the time wasted by all the commotion, but it wasn’t enough to give VVV-Venlo an opportunity to pull ahead.
